Permanent SwiftSignTM and SwiftGateTM system installation on the south approach of the Jacques Cartier Bridge towards Montreal to manage the reversible centre lane.
The automated gates allow for optimal and safe traffic control during the closure of the bridge’s northbound centre lane. The Jacques Cartier Bridge is a five-lane bridge 2 1/6 miles (3.4 km) in length, spanning the St. Lawrence River between the cities of Montreal and Longueuil. Approximately 35.8 million vehicles cross the bridge every year. The bridge’s 5 lanes include a reversible lane, which is open during morning and evening rush hours, in order to facilitate traffic in both directions. Therefore, the bridge’s centre lane alternates directions (northbound or southbound) according to the flow of traffic. This lane is closed to traffic outside of peak hours.
The installation of the SwiftSignTM and SwiftGateTM help improve the safety of the reversible lane on the south approach of the bridge. The traffic signs and gates are activated from the bridge’s control center where they are synchronised with the overhead lights. A similar project for the north approach is currently being studied by JCCBI in collaboration with the City of Montreal.
